Shawn Mendes artfully recreates “Lost In Translation” for his playful, captivating “Lost In Japan” video.

Up until now, Shawn Mendes’s video for the songs on his self-titled album have reflected the songs themselves practically exactly. “In My Blood” goes for a prolonged metaphor, while “Nervous” looks (and sounds) like the kind of spirited happiness generally reserved for a Gap commercial.

But on Friday (October 26), the 20-year-old songwriter lastly got to get a little loose with the Sofia Coppola-indebted clip for “Lost In Japan,” possibly the friskiest and loveliest cut of the bunch. Instead of a guy sending a “u up?” DM, as the tune may suggest, Mendes takes on the Bill Murray character fromLost In Translation, forlorn in a Japanese hotel but all of a sudden making a psychological connection with a lady he fulfills by opportunity.

And then, naturally, he’s at the karaoke bar, doing his own tune and not Roxy Music. But that’s OKAY– the clip keeps the state of mind light and doesn’t drift into the movie’s melancholy. And, oh right: Zedd’s there too! He’s at the karaoke bar singing right

along with the album version until a key switch takes place and the video’s soundtrack becomes his own neon-blurred remix of the song. Creative, Zedd. Really smart.

Watch the whole delightful “Lost In Japan” video above. Oh, and there’s also a scene where Shawn is quickly shirtless. You’re welcome.
